Everything But a "Stop" Button

Check out my high concept
Adam Sandler has the weekend to himself with "Click", a genuinely terrible movie that will doubtless pull in something like $40 million, since parents who've already taken the kids to see "Cars" a couple of times will want something new this week.

They have no idea that what's being sold as a silly wish-fulfillment comedy is actually Sandler's take on "It's a Wonderful Life" and "A Christmas Carol", with dead pets, dead parents and cancer being trotted out for cheap sentimentality (and cheap laughs, at least as far as the cancer goes) ... but that's a credit to Sony's marketing campaign, which avoided even hinting at most of the movie's more bizarre indulgences.

Kudos, you selective bastards. Kudos.

The only other release that dares to go up against the Sandler machine is Miramax' "The Heart of the Game", a lightweight but decent enough basketball documentary about a Seattle high-school coach and one of his most talented players. It takes a good 45 minutes for director Ward Serrill to figure out where his story is, but once he does, he bores right in on it.

I've got a fairly complicated wedding to attend this weekend, so I won't have much opportunity for the blogging, but I'll see you all on Monday.

Oh, and "Superman Returns" is the best movie of 1983. I'll explain later.
