Aw, Come On!

It's a nice day, so I really hate to be the bearer of bad news ... but Engadget and the Digital Bits are reporting that Blu-ray continues to be strangled with its own metaphorical umbilicus.

It appears that Samsung's BD-P1000 player, the only Blu-ray machine on the market and therefore the only one consumers with which will have any first-hand experience, can't play the format's dual-layer discs, forcing Sony to delay the release of those titles -- one of which is "Lawrence of Arabia", one of my favorite films and the sole reason I might have gone blindly with Blu-ray over HD-DVD -- and sending Samsung scurrying to devise a firmware update that lets the player recognize the discs.

This, after the revelation last month that the player was also being shipped with a sharpness enhancer accidentally enabled, which explains the degraded image being demonstrated in, oh, every single demo setup on the continent.

I don't know what to say anymore. I just don't.

Fortunately, I've got a 10 am screening, so I can just run away from the keyboard ...
