Oh, It's On

I don't know ... sixty million?
So I saw "Snakes on a Plane" last night, and while I don't have the time to go into detail this morning -- dog needs walking, movies need seeing -- I will say, without reservation, that it's an entirely ridiculous motion picture, and that's a good thing.

In fact, between this and the impending Jason Statham DOA-on-speed actioner "Crank", I think we're finally seeing filmmakers embrace the idea of the B-movie again -- high-concept thrills and laughs with no underlying message or morality. It's about the ride, and "Snakes on a Plane" is a movie that delivers that ride. You might feel a little guilty afterward, but on its own terms it's almost absurdly satisfying.

And based on last night's screening, there's an audience component at work that won't be replicated on DVD. See this with a crowd.

My "official" review will run in Monday's Metro. Today, though, you can find me opining on "Bon Cop Bad Cop", "Trust the Man", "The Illusionist", and the truly inept "Hate Crime". And if you're based in Toronto, you want to think about catching "Brothers of the Head" at the Bloor Cinema -- I can guarantee you've never seen anything like it.
