Fermez le TIFF
The Toronto International Film Festival has wrapped for another year, its various prizes announced yesterday at a really quite nice cocktail reception thing at the Hilton.
Since I was stuck juggling my FIPRESCI duties with my more commercial Metro obligations, I managed to miss almost every one of the other juries' picks -- though I'm very happy that "Sur La Trace d'Igor Rizzi" landed the CityTV prize for Best Canadian First Feature. It's a terrific debut; check out my Metro capsule for the slightly expanded version of that sentiment.
Oh, and the FIPRESCI thing? As you might have heard, we gave the prize to Gabriel Range's "Death of a President" -- a decision to which Torontoist takes some serious offense, which surprises me. I haven't really seen such a vehement reaction to the movie, beyond the reliable frothers on the right-wing commentator circuit, of course.
Still, if the Torontoist poster has actually seen the movie, I guess he's entitled to call me names; I've certainly done the same when I disagree with someone else's award.
So? Anybody else think I'm a complete idiot?

I'm cross posting from Torontoist, Norm, but you can read my review here. Let me know what you think; I'm perfectly willing to hear why you chose it, in fact I quite want to be convinced. E-mail me or post on Torontist, I'm looking forward to it!
