News As It Happens

Non-TIFF stuff took up most of my morning -- and all of my attention -- but I've had just enough time to take a whip around the net, check my e-mail, and discover a few things in which I believe you may have an interest.

First: It looks like those Blu-ray players can handle dual-layer discs after all; as Bill Hunt reported on The Digital Bits yesterday, the problem was with the burned media being used to test for authoring glitches rather than pressed, finished product. Engadget puts Bill's discovery in the proper context:

In all honesty we're kind of disappointed at this revelation, as
[we] were just about to snatch up an HD DVD player, and now once
again we're hopelessly torn between the two formats.

Second: 20th Century Fox and MySpace have teamed up to offer special preview screenings of the brilliant "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan" to selected MySpace members in six countries next Wednesday, September 20th.

I'd love to attend the Berlin event ... though the one in Dallas might be more interesting.

Third: If you were planning to see "The Black Dahlia", don't bother. But you might find "The Last Kiss" an intriguing surprise. Metro is holding my reviews of "Everyone's Hero" and "Gridiron Gang" until Monday, but here's the skinny: The cartoon one is an abomination, and the one with the living cartoon is actually pretty good.

Off to squeeze in one last screening before my jury deliberations ...

UPDATE: Stoopid Metro linkage: Here's the correct URL for my "Last Kiss" review.
