TIFF Picks: Wednesday, September 13
As seen in Metro, natch.
"Bunny Chow"
Now that Tsotsi has brought South Africa’s cinematic explosion to the world’s attention, here’s a film about life in today’s Johannesburg that doesn’t follow a crowd-pleasing, bog-standard redemption plotline. John Barber’s shaggy digital-video debut has no gangsters and no guns – it’s just a genial observational comedy about three stand-up comics driving to a gig at a music festival, and their inevitable misadventures. There are, however, no bunnies in the film.
12:15 pm at the Paramount 3; repeats Saturday, 8:15 pm at the Varsity 4.
"Pan’s Labyrinth"
He’s made his name in North America with "Blade II" and "Hellboy", but Guillermo del Toro has always been a Spanish-language fabulist at heart. "Pan’s Labyrinth" returns to the Spanish Civil War setting of his masterful 2001 ghost story "The Devil’s Backbone" to tell the lush, magical story of a young girl (Ivana Baquero) who discovers a fantastic netherworld underneath the military garrison run by her monstrous stepfather. Deftly balancing grim realism and innocent wonder, del Toro has created a dark spin on Alice in Wonderland that plays like a fusion of Terry Gilliam and David Cronenberg’s greatest works.
11:45 am at the Varsity 8.
Also worthwhile:
"Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing"
9:30 am at the Ryerson Theatre.
"The Dog Problem"
12 pm at the Ryerson Theatre; repeats Saturday, 8:45 am at the Paramount 2.
"Sleeping Dogs Lie"
3 pm at the Paramount 1.
"Syndromes and a Century"
4:45 pm at the Isabel Bader Theatre; repeats Friday, 6 pm at the Varsity 3, and Saturday, 4:45 pm at the Varsity 3.
"Election" and "Election 2"
6 pm at the Al Green Theatre; repeats Saturday, 3:45 pm at the Varsity 2.
"American Hardcore"
9 pm at the Paramount 4; repeats Friday, 12:15 pm at the Paramount 3.
