Little Wonders

This week’s releases include a wonderful new Wes Anderson movie and a nifty Steven Soderbergh experiment, and there is no reason to complain about anything ever.

Unless you see Flower, I guess. So don’t do that.

Catwalk: Tales from the Cat Show Circuit: Perhaps as counterprogramming to Isle of Dogs, Aaron Hancox and Michael McNamara’s doc explores at the clash of personalities — both human and feline — in the high-stakes Canadian cat-show circuit. Michelle really likes it.

Flower: Max Winkler’s swaggering indie mistakes attitude for edge, wasting a very talented cast — including Zoey Deutch, Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn and Tim Heidecker — in the process.

Isle of Dogs: Wes Anderson’s latest is a magnificent stop-motion melancomedy about loyalty and biting, and you should see it on the biggest screen you can find. I will say no more.

Madame: Kevin is not terribly impressed by Amanda Sther’s comedy of manners, which stars lots of people I like — Harvey Keitel! Toni Collette! Michael Smiley! Roissy de Palma! — but fails to give them much to do.

Midnight Sun: Bella Thorne and Patrick Schwarzenegger co-star in a romance that, as far as I know, does not have any vampires in it. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t really paying close attention.

Pacific Rim: Uprising: Did we think there’d be another one of these? Will they find a way to bring rampaging kaiju back into this dimension? Will John Boyega look as intimidating and poised in a Jaeger suit as Idris Elba? I mean, I certainly hope so. Rad thought it was decent; I’m still on board.

Sherlock Gnomes: Hey, if they can make a Pacific Rim sequel, they can make a Gnomeo  & Juliet sequel. At least Emily Blunt and James McAvoy are getting paid what they’re worth. (Glenn’s review will be up later today.)

Unsane: Steven Soderbergh’s version of a psychological thriller is still very much a Steven Soderbergh movie — cerebral and puckish in its treatment of the genre — and if the plot should falter, Claire Foy’s performance does not.

There, that’s plenty to enjoy. I am in London enjoying things that are not movies, so go see something for me.
