Modes Of Expression

On this week’s episode of Someone Else’s Movie I’m joined by Sofia Banzhaf, whom you may have been impressed by in everything from Closet Monster, Bitten, Carter, Murdoch Mysteries and most recently Black Conflux, which played TIFF last year alongside her short film I Am in the The World As Free and Slender As a Deer On a Plain.

And both of those made it onto Canada’s Top Ten last fall, which  means I Am in the World … is screening this Sunday afternoon at the Lightbox in one of the annual shorts showcases. Which is great, because it’s really good.

And what did she pick? Paul Schrader’s 2013 experiment The Canyons, the one where Lindsay Lohan and James Deen play a pair of West Hollywood scenesters whose comfortably numb relationship is knocked off its axis when she convinces him to cast her ex in an upcoming horror project.

Bret Easton Ellis wrote it, so it’s basically a mash-up of Less Than Zero and American Psycho. I didn’t care for it, but Sofia loves it, so here you go! Even if you’ve never heard of the movie, this one’s worth a listen.
