Yes, it’s an obvious title but David Byrne just turned 70 so Talking Heads have been on my mind. Sue me! Or just listen to this week’s episode of Someone Else’s Movie and you’ll understand, because this week Nathalie Bibeau and I are talking about Sean Penn’s 2007 film of Jon Krakauer’s book Into the Wild, and it’s all about a young man who sets out on a journey to oblivion.

Krakauer’s book had some opinions on whether Chris McCandless understood that he was drifting towards his own death, but Penn’s film takes a step back, letting Emile Hirsch’s beatific performance cloud things somewhat. We can follow along with Alexander Supertramp but he remains unknown to us, and that’s something remarkable. Nathalie experienced Into the Wild at exactly the right time in her development as an artist, and we talk about that; the result is a fairly thoughtful episode, and I’m glad we got to do it.
